Over the next five years, buildings were demolished and the street was widened from 18.3 metres to 30.5 metres. The council oversaw the construction of the Municipal Shops, which provided commercial outlets at street level and professional chambers above. This photograph taken on 30 April 1920 shows the buildings at 82–106 Oxford Streets, between Crown and Palmer streets. The three-storey building has a distinctive decorated parapet. The tenant on the corner of Crown Street was the Institute of Physical Culture. Horses and carts and pedestrians in the street.
