Unique IDPC-000027Alternative titleJohn Baptist Memorial Fountain, Hyde ParkTypeFountainDescriptionThe John Baptist Fountain, sometimes known as the John Baptist Memorial Fountain, is an ornamental fountain located in the south-west quadrant of Hyde Park North, near the corner of Park and Elizabeth Streets. It is the oldest surviving locally-made ornamental fountain in New South Wales.
The fountain is named for John Baptist, a prominent horticulturalist and businessman within whose market garden it was first erected. The exact date of its initial instillation is unknown, although it was in place at the gardens by the 1860s.
In 1888, after Baptist's death, the fountain was donated to the Trustees of Hyde Park by his son, John Baptist junior. It was initially installed on the eastern side of the main avenue in Hyde Park North, but was moved to its current location in the early 1920s.External linksJohn Baptist Fountain, Fountains & water features, City of SydneyHyde Park, State Heritage RegisterSubject tagsFountainsHeritage statusState heritage register
