These carts came to be referred to as “widows carts” and were generally understood to be a charitable Council response to the welfare of a widow who had been married to one of Council’s workers, often a carter. Bridget Callaghan was, however, not a widow but her appointment was advocated by a number of Aldermen as a deserving woman.

1899 November 20 – granted divorce on grounds of habitual drunkenness and cruelty of husband Thomas Callaghan [ref: newspaper reports 21 November 1899]
1899 Trouble with Oliver Deane, Clerk & Timekeeper, responsible for pay vouchers – persistently wanting her to go out with him or make him dinner – on her refusal allegedly suspending her driver – statutory declaration made in September 1903 –[ref: A-00183369, 1903/119]
1900 January – Retrenched with dismissal of 20 Carters, 26 Labourers and 2 block sweepers. [Proceedings of Council]
1900 Letter 23 January by Alderman Norton to Lord Mayor Matthew Harris re Mrs Callaghan, retrenched - deserving woman with children “having been divorced from her worthless husband”- request keep her on - same woman as Ald Buckle, Barlow, Waine and self (Norton) with others “were interested and brought under your notice some months ago” [ref: A-00148103; 1900/0267]
1900– Cart Driver William H Delardes was sued for support by wife Florence; he was employed by Mrs Bridget Callaghan and paid 12/6 per week plus board and lodging [ref: ‘Truth’ Sunday 30 September 1900 p 7]
1901 September: not found in presumed complete lists of carters in Cleansing Department by Gordon and City Surveyor’s Department by Richards [ref: A-00163705]
