The Pyrmont First World War Memorial was created by Gilbert Doble, who was originally a stonemason with a studio in Marrickville. It took over five years to raise the £1,000 construction costs, which were mostly raised through community donations. The length of time it took to raise the funds is indicative of the working-class demographic of Pyrmont and Ultimo at that time. In the background is the Commonwealth Bank building at 2 Union Street, Pyrmont.
