Waterfront Park was created on the site of the Colonial Sugar Refinery’s (CSR) caneite factory. Caneite, a type of particle board used for construction, was made from the leftover sugar cane after the sugar had been extracted. The large rusty metal balls visible in the centre of the image, above the sandstone walls, are defibrators related to the manufacture of caneite that were salvaged from the old factory prior to its demolition in order to create Waterfront Park. The brown building directly behind the caneite defibrators is the Cooperage building on the corner of Refinery Drive and Bowman Street was repurposed to function as office space in 2005. The apartment building on the right with yellow sides is known as the Distillery, located at 45 Bowman Street, Pyrmont. The Distillery is part of the Distillery Hill apartment complex.
