Unique IDA-00069783SeriesSydney Water Photograph Collection, 1880-1945Date qualifierno dateFormatPhotograph - DigitalDescriptionThe ventshaft is part of the Bondi Ocean Outfall System (BOOS) which was completed in 1889. Many of the metal tube ventshafts were incorporated into the system once it was determined that they were beneficial in removing noxious gases from the sewers, reducing internal pressure and making them a safer place. Sewer vents were used as a means of ventilating the sewerage system and in turn to prevent the corrosion of the pipes within the system, to eliminate sewer gases from homes, streets and the sewerage system, hence making them safer places and reducing pressure within the system. Large brick ventshafts were the first used for these purposes but became too expensive when it was determined that vents were required at regular intervals to serve their purpose properly. Steel tube vents became more common as they were cheaper to construct and easier to erect. ( see Sydney Water Heritage Item Number 4570342)LanguageEnglish (eng)
