Description
The City Surveyor’s Department generated 12 resumption albums between 1906 and 1940 (Volumes 18, 25, 27, 28 to 31, 37, 49 and 50). There are also two presentation albums of resumption photographs (Volumes 16 and 42). These resumption photographs show various streetscapes and buildings before they were swept away in the compulsory council resumptions in the first four decades of the 20th century. The Sydney Municipal Council gained authority to resume properties in 1905. The council took up resumption with enthusiasm, particularly when Allen Arthur Taylor was the Lord Mayor in 1905–1906 and 1909–1912. The City Surveyor’s Department engaged the photographic firm Hall & Co to take photographs of the City’s resumptions from 1906 until at least 1928. Hall & Co kept the negatives, which means that the City only holds the prints for these photographs. Hall & Co’s practice was to inscribe the date the photograph was taken on to the negative, which distinguishes their prints from other photographic negatives and prints commissioned by the City Building Surveyor. This album shows photographs taken between 1910 and 1921. Pages are numbered: pp. 1-18 - Pyrmont, Harris St, Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Union St, 1911. pp. 19-24 - Kensington St at Regent St, 1910 pp. 25-45 - Harwood Lane widening & the remodelling in the vicinity, including Murray St, 1915. pp. 47-52 - Pyrmont St, Bayview Terrace, 1916. pp. 52-55 - Clarence Lane, 1921 [Hall & Co.] Note: some of the glass negs of the photos of Clarence Lane are held in the State Library of NSW. The areas covered in this album include: City, Chippendale, Pyrmont.
