Description
This series of plans cossets of tracings and dyelines drawn by Norman Weekes, Architect-Engineer of Sydney. The plans record his design for the remodelling of Hyde Park. In 1924, the Architects Association of NSW and the Institute of Architects, NSW requested that Council prevent the Railway Commissioners' intended restoration of Hyde Park proceeding without first holding a public competition. The object was to obtain the restoration on the best designs and on the most approved and up-to-date lines. Council approved and adopted the request on 27 May 1924 and the competition was advertised on 17 July 1926. Competitors were to remain anonymous and were required to submit a plan, a bird’s eye view, supporting sketches and a brief report on the intention of their plans to an Assessment Panel. In a report to Council on 16 August 1927, it is stated that the assessors had chosen Design No 4 by Norman Weekes, however, they wanted some modifications to the design. These modifications included the exclusion of tramways and vehicular traffic from park area, limitation of Park treatment to existing boundaries, reduced main avenue and symmetrical circular place. The amended plans were adopted by Council on 24 August 1927. Some of the original anonymous designs are lost, however, the remainder, the amended drawings and copies comprise this series. The plans depict layout of the park with trees and plants identified, lamp standards, rough or preliminary sketches, levels and elevations and a bird’s eye view. The plans were found wrapped in bundles and apart from their division into tracing/dyelines no other order was discernible. No new order has been imposed on the plans. Some items have a drawing number - LA 20, 25, 40 multiple copies of some items are included in this series.
