Description
This series contains plans of parks, reserves and playgrounds. It includes plans of fountains, gardens, floodlighting, signs, tree and shrub planting, rest areas, footpaths, floats, display boards and decorations. There are also drawings of street widenings and other projects not apparently related to the business of the creating agencies, possibly because the available design/drafting resources were also used by other Council departments. Most of the plans appear to have been drawn by officers of the Department but some are by external firms. A few are copies of plans in other series. The plans were initially created by the City Engineers Department I AG-0005 from 01/01/1933 to 31/12/1947 and then the Parks and Recreations Dept (AG-0010) from 01/01/1948 to 31/12/1988. Responsibility for parks and related matters was moved to the new South Sydney City Council (SSCC) under the 'cross servicing' arrangements that were in place until about 1993. The South Sydney City Council Parks and Properties Department (AG-0035) created the records from 1/1/1989 to 31/12/1991 and the South Sydney City Council Public Works and Services Department (AG-0216) from 1/1/1992 until some time in 1999. After that, SSCC continued to create records in this series, for matters within the SSCC local government area, until some time in 1999. The records were controlled by the Parks Plans Job and Index Cards (AS-0948) from around 1933 to 1999. The Plans usually show the location of the work, the work to be carried out, the initials of the officer who drew the plan, the scale, the date, and the job number and drawing number. Original drawings by Ilmar Berzins, and copies, are found in this record series. Each job was allocated a single running number from the job register. Any work done subsequently for the same location was given that same job number. Each drawing for a job was also numbered consecutively. The items in the series are a mix of original drawing, paper copies and 35mm microfilm copies (as aperture cards). The list of items shows [R] original paper or [M] microfilmed indicating the format.
