Description
In 1988, Council began a series of hearing tests for its employees to determine whether they had suffered any hearing loss during their employment. Employees were classified into four categories - A to D. A for those with normal hearing, down to D for those who had suffered significant hearing losses. Those employees who had suffered hearing loss due to their employment with Council received compensation. The cards record the following information: name, age, whether a retest was required, hearing category, employee number, job classification, date of test, address, date of birth, depot (if employee works at an outside depot), name of supervisor, year and amount of previous claims, years employed, hearing history, test results, and comments. The cards also record when employees were referred to hearing specialists and the amount of compensation paid. In cases where compensation was paid a file was raised in CRS 146, Workers' Compensation Files. The compensation file number was noted on the card. In 1989, Sydney City Council was split by the City of Sydney Act 1988 into two Councils - Sydney City Council and South Sydney City Council. Under cross-servicing arrangements the Medical Unit of Sydney City Council provided services to South Sydney City Council employees, including conducting hearing tests. At the time of the split the hearing cards were divided into Sydney City and South Sydney. (Many of the South Sydney City Council employees were former Sydney City Council employees).
