Description
These cards provide an index to Series AS-0119, City Engineer's Miscellaneous Books, but many also contain a summary of research carried out on various topics by the surveyors who worked for the City Engineer's Department. Most of the entries relate to streets and street works. The cards record the subject, a brief summary of works carried out, and where relevant, references to Resolutions of Council and documents in the following series: - Miscellaneous Books (AS-0119) - Town Clerk's Correspondence Files (AS-0034) - City Engineer's Correspondence Files (AS-0144) - Activity Files (AS-0116), and - Deed Packets (AS-0050). The newer cards sometimes have a copy of the Resolution of Council pasted in, and occasionally a reduced copy of a newspaper clipping. Many of the cards relate to streets and lanes, in particular their status (public or private), but many other subjects are covered, including the following: Action plans; aerial photographs; street alignments; fountains; areas (in acres or miles) of various municipalities; height of various towers in Sydney; awnings; bench marks; boundary markers and mile posts; bridges and tunnels; bus shelters; stairs and steps; Cenotaph in Martin Place; street signs; drainage; driveways; electricity; encroachments; fences; footways; horse trough removals; lanes; lamps; Moore Park; Martin Place; parking; parking stations; pedestrian crossings; Police Call boxes; posts on roadways; Pyrmont Bridge and Incinerator; railways; ramps; resident parking; retaining walls; roadways; seats on footways; shelters;signs; splays; stormwater drains; strategic plans; street closures; street furniture; street lighting; street name plates; subdivisions; Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House; Tank Stream; telephone cabinets; towers; Town Hall; traffic control; trams; trees; urinals; and woodpaving. It is not clear when the series began but most of the entries appear to date from the early 1930s, with references to Series AS-0119, City Engineer's Miscellaneous Books, backdated to 1881.
