Description
The three-storey Pastoral Chambers building at 375 George Street, shortly before demolition in 1908. The building was constructed in 1883 for Pitt, Son and Badgery's, stock and station agents and wool merchants. The architect was Thomas Rowe. The building was once home to photographic suppliers Baker & Rouse, who were the Kodak representatives in Australia. The Photographic Society of NSW used the rooms upstairs for meetings and exhibitions. The crowd on the street is looking through the windows of Baker & Rouse’s new store next door. A horse stands waiting at the kerb. (The Bulletin, 11 August 1883; Illustrated Sydney News, 20 January 1883, p. 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article64034335; 'Five-storey shop in George Street', The Sydney Morning Herald, 3 August 1954, p. 11, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18437912 ).
