Sydney Lunar Festival
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to the Sydney Lunar Festival.
The City of Sydney has celebrated Lunar New Year since 1996. Until 2019 the festival was known as Chinese New Year. Since 2020 it has been known as the Sydney Lunar Festival.
From its beginnings as a community street market, the festival has grown to become one of the largest celebrations of the Lunar New Year outside Asia and one of Sydney’s major annual arts festivals.
As well as the Chinese community, the festival involves all communities which celebrate the Lunar New Year, in particular the Korean and Vietnamese communities, and is embraced as a favourite annual event by the broader audience in Sydney.
The City produces four anchor events, which are:
- Festival Launch
- Chinese New Year Markets (originally in Dixon Street Mall but moved to Belmore Park from 2005)
- Parade
- Dragon Boat Races
These are supplemented by a variety of other events.
