On 10 July 1901, a fire swept through the department store. Five people died and half a million pounds worth of merchandise was destroyed. This fire led to better firefighting services for Sydney and regulations that mandated fire-proofing of new buildings. This view shows the George Street frontage, near the corner of Gipps Street (now Barlow Street). The building facade at 770 George Street had to be taken down for public safety. The majority of the facade was taken down with dynamite on the second night after the fire, but the 'big front wall' withstood the blast. The wall finally fell at 1am on 13 July when it was pulled down by a 'steel hawser [rope] hauled by two steam tram motors'.
