Council was in regular correspondence with its owner, Mrs Annie W Hoolahan (or Whoolahan). In 1903 she was ordered to carry out extensive repairs, including reconstructing the drainage system. By 1907, demolition was recommended as the dwelling was dangerous ‘to occupants and the passing public’, although workmen were busily ‘patching up the deficiencies and hiding the dangers'. The property in question was part of a row of double-storey terraces on the corner of Carlton Street. They had a decorative parapet, enclosed verandahs, and a central plaque inscribed with ‘Carlton Terrace 1879'. A group of women stand together further along near the corner. Irving Street was swallowed up by the brewery by 1982, although the street has now been reinstated.
