However, its origins as an educational institution date back to 1833 with the establishment of the first Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts. A central part of UTS's recent history is its iconic Tower, a landmark that has come to speak for the organisation in many different ways. Inspiring debate, passion and controversy, this unmistakeable edifice symbolises the unique face of a university known for its innovation, its diversity and its creativity. UTS is a diverse campus and within it are numerous narrative possibilities. So many of these stories in this book find their origin in place, and one conspicuous place in particular, the Tower building. Stories from the Tower was conceived as a celebration of UTS by showcasing the people and places that make up the university community. It was always intended to be more lively and creative than the usual official university accounts; to approach history via the sidelines and the corners, the personal and the small moment. In compiling this book about UTS, the editors were especially keen to focus on the diverse range of voices and narratives, from staff and students both current and former; and to include the people who are behind the scenes and sometimes overlooked. Of course we would also feature some of our best people, and their most remarkable achievements, those student, graduate and academic leading lights whose contributions have resonated far beyond the university in so many ways. What became apparent, as we worked on this book, was the great truth behind the ideals and objectives of UTS as a place of diversity, egalitarianism and inclusiveness. A particular pleasure was the way this book enabled people to express their passion, enthusiasm and dedication, as well as celebrate the cleverness, innovation and creativity of the university community. Twenty-five years ago the Tower building was a bold and controversial statement standing alone at the Railway Square end of Sydney. Now that there are other buildings growing all around, and now that the Tower has become part of the history, the language, and the conversation, the next 25 years will be quite different. However, it's always been clear that the Tower has come to define the university, be synonymous with it, to speak for it. That was apparent by the many Tower stories people offered us, and by the way the building entered into so much of the conversation. Stories from the Tower represents both a snapshot of that conversation and a slice of a broader dialogue. Collecting histories, memoirs, anecdotes and images, and featuring contributions from alumni both famous and not-so-famous, as well as past and present staff, Stories from the Tower UTS:1988?2013 offers a broad, lively insight into UTS's rich social and cultural life, and an illuminating portrait of one of Australia's leading universities.
