From the 1950s through to the 1970s it was one of the few pubs in Sydney where Aboriginal people were permitted to drink (others at this time were the Clifton on Botany Road and the Cricketer's Arms on the corner of Botany Road and Henderson Street).
The Empress Hotel was both a central place to socialise and an important meeting place for the Aboriginal community of Redfern -see Dictionary of Sydney entry.
