The photographs were requested by the City Archives to document the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the City and its communities in 2020.
The pandemic commenced in 2019, the first cases were seen in Australia in January 2020. A number of businesses and government agencies in the City of Sydney local area locked down in mid March 2020. A second wave of infections was experienced in in Sydney in July and August 2020 and smaller outbreaks have followed.
The photographs document effects of public health measures such as social distancing, mask wearing (which was not mandatory in NSW), roped off outdoor cafes, warning signage and deserted thoroughfares on what would normally be very busy shopping, tourist and transport precincts.
