The residents of Pyrmont petitioned the Council in 1872 to erect a public swimming baths. These were erected circa 1877. Women were admitted for limited hours after 1884.
The earlier baths were replaced by a new public swimming baths constructed by the Municipal Council of Sydney which opened in 1902.
In 1929 there were plans to demolish the baths, but residents campaigned against their closure and they were not demolished until 1946.
