Unique IDPE-004721SurnameSolomons Given namesVictor CharlesAlternative nameVicBiographical abstractPhotographer and collector Vic Solomons was raised in Watson’s Bay, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. He began taking photographs in 1956, when he was 14 years old. His family never owned a motor vehicle, so transport for Vic and the Solomons family was always via tram or bus.
As an adolescent with a growing interest in transport and trams, by the late 1950’s Vic could see the ‘writing on the wall’ for tram services in Sydney. Many of his photographs document trams and tramways in Sydney during this time.
Since the cessation of tram services in Sydney in February 1961, Vic has maintained his interest through his involvement with the Sydney Tramway Museum.
Vic Solomons has been a generous donor to the City Archives over several years, providing images, postcards and historical ephemera related to trams and transport in Sydney. His 2021 collection donation of over 4500 images of trams and tramways in Sydney represents one of the largest donations received by the City Archives. Vic continues to provide relevant content to the City Archives which will be added to our online catalogue over time.
