Rupert James Gough was born in December 1914 in South Australia where he spent his early childhood. In the 1920s, the family moved to Bexley where Rupert lived for 20 years. Rupert worked in the optical field, considered an essential profession during World War II, which prevented him going to war. He became a keen photographer, developing and enlarging his own black and white photographs, taken with his trusty Canon 35mm camera. In later years he turned to colour film and professional processing, even dabbling in digital photography. Rupert had a keen love of history and was a member of many national and international historical societies. Rupert Gough died in 2007 at the age of 93 and this collection of photographs related to the City of Sydney local government area was donated to the City Archives by Sutherland Historical Society.
