Unique IDA-01174259SeriesDonations to CouncilDate qualifierno dateFormatPhotograph - DigitalDescriptionPortrait of Irish immigrant, Daniel Brennan (1866 - 1928), owner and founder of Brennan's department store in King Street, Newtown and the nearby Majestic Theatre, on the corner of Wilson Street and Erskineville Road. Brennan took over the former C.G. Hatte's properties at 294 to 302 King Street Newtown in 1908 to expand his retail business. Seven years later, he purchased the Wilson Street block behind the store and built ten shops, apartments and the Majestic Theatre, which was first leased to Sir Benjamin Fuller’s theatre company and much later in 1955 to the Elizabethan Trust who changed the name to the Elizabethan Theatre. Brennan was a keen sportsman who bred and raced horses in Australia and New Zealand. The organ in St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Newtown was donated by his family as a gift to Newtown in his memory.
