1920s Fashion
1920s Fashion
A period of social and economic change followed the First World War (WWI) with challenges to existing class structures and gender roles. Clothing was influenced by Art Decoratifs and the emerging Modernist art movement.
Hemlines rose, waistlines dropped to the hip, and hairstyles shortened with the fashionable bob or close crop. There was a rise of comfortable attire for women, including the chemise dress, pyjama suits, and pleated skirts with cloche hats. Evening wear was highly decorative in fabric choices and beaded embellishments. There was a strong desire for costume jewellery and silk stockings.
Men wore three-piece suits with wider cut legs made in wool, often patterned in tweed or stripes, in blue, brown, and grey with hats such as Fedora, Boater, or Panama. They were often clean shaven.
Sportwear, swimwear, sweater and cardigan combinations were worn by men and women.
