Halliday Engineering Pty Ltd
This collection includes selected items relating to Halliday Engineering.
Charles Halliday, a pattern maker and millwright, arrived in Sydney from Scotland in 1852. With two colleagues, he established The Sydney Machine Engineering Company in Bathurst Street Sydney. The company moved to larger premises in Pyrmont. Charles later bought out his partners and the business became Hallidays Engine Works. Charles was included in the ‘Man of Mark’ book of distinguished gentlemen.
At the turn of the century, Charles’ seven sons took over their father’s business. They faced difficult times as many shipping terminals temporarily closed or relocated during the outbreak of bubonic plague.
In the following years the company concentrated less on foundry work and more on engineering. The business became known as Halliday Brothers. During both World Wars, Halliday Brothers carried out repairs on hundreds of Australian and international ships engaged in war.
Relocating to Sussex Street in 1963, Halliday Brothers concentrated on marine and general engineering repairs and also offered plumbing services to their growing clientele. The business changed name again in 1972, becoming Halliday Engineering Pty Ltd. The firm is still in operation, run by fifth generation members of the family, and is now located in Rozelle.
The photographs below relate to sites associated with the company or shipping and other works they were involved in.
