Within easy reach of several theatres it was a meeting place for performing artists particularly those temporarily resting. It was a place where theatrical news and gossip were exchanged and also where representatives of managements sometimes engaged actors and vaudeville artists usually for small parts or for work in suburban and travelling companies.'
