Survey Plots
Description
Unique IDAS-1258Start dateBetween 1st January 1920 and 31st December 1979Start date qualifiercircaShort descriptionThis series contains worksheets and maps drawn by Council's surveyors.DescriptionThis series contains worksheets and maps drawn by Council's surveyors. It includes printed and hand-drawn survey plots on various mediums including paper, card, linen, tracing paper and film. The series is linked with the Surveyors Field Book Series and each references the other in many instances.
The survey plots were done for a variety of purposes, including:
-Calculations – before computers, surveyors used calculation sheets to transcribe observed data from the field book series in order to more easily work on the data
-Survey plotting – as the basis for a final plan to be supplied to a client, or lodged at the Lands Department or Land Titles Office
-Sketches – for clearly showing survey data for clients
-Notes – recording important data relating to a survey.
There is no clear reason yet known for how each series was numbered, however the prefix is shown in some records as being for the 'Shelf Number' and the suffix as 'Plot Number', so one theory is that it was just for archiving purposes and as an expedient for finding records quickly.
Further survey plots are yet to be digitised.
