When it was due in Sydney Peter Fischer, a keen photographer who had a large flash unit, managed to position himself on the Town Hall steps, behind Lord Mayor Patrick Darcy Hills.
This is one of a series of 11 images donated by Peter. This photograph shows the Lord Mayor holding the torch while talking to an unidentified runner. Peter also managed to obtain photos of the crowd of 30,000 people jammed into the square and the dummy torch (a flaming jam tin on a stick), carried by university students, who ran in to hoax the Lord Mayor just before the Olympic torch arrived.
