Engraving - Opening of the Sydney Council, circa 1846

In 1823, a Legislative Council was established but the Governor retained the power to appoint officials to the Council and to over-ride their decisions. The Imperial Act of 1842 created a new Legislative Council and Sydney was officially incorporated as a city. One third of the Council was nominated and two thirds elected by property holders. This engraving is from the original edition of the Illustrated London News.

This engraving appears to be an artist interpretation as the building depicted does not match any of the officially recorded sites known for council meetings. According to council minutes, elected officials were meeting in York Street from Jan 18, 1843 where this engraving likely depicts even though the opening is recorded as circa 1946. Fowles book ‘Sydney’ (1848) shows the façade of the town council chambers which looks similar to the one in the engraving.
