1940s Fashion
1940s Fashion
WWII had a profound impact on fashion in the first half of the 1940s. Clothing styles were dictated by rationing and shortage of materials which emphasised Utility clothing and uniforms for both men and women. Practical and casual clothing, including leisure wear became popular. Wool was widely used as silk was in short supply.
Dress styles had simple lines and incorporated padded shoulders, nipped-in waist, and hems just below the knee.
Post war, Dior's New Look silhouette, that was characterized by rounded shoulders, cinched-in waist, and long full skirt with a generous amount of fabric was very influential.
Men’s fashion was simplified with single-breasted jackets with less pockets and smaller lapels. Trousers no longer had turn-up hems and less material was used. In reaction to this, in post war years men's suits had wide shoulders, high-waists, wide-legs, and wide ties.
Children's wear emulated adult fashion. For young children there was an emphasis on homemade, hand-knitted, and second hand clothing.
