Unique IDPC-000008DescriptionThe AWA Tower is a radio transmission tower which sits on top of the 15 story AWA building in Sydney, Australia. It is located at 45-47 York Street and was designed by Roberts, Marks and McCredie in association with DT Morrow and Gordon. It was built by William Hughes and Co from 1937-1939.
The tower is 48 metres high on top of a 55 metre building. It was Sydney's tallest building from the time of construction until the 1960s.
The tower was modelled on Berlin's Funkturm Tower, built a few years earlier, and both took inspiration from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The building is decorated with symbols of communication, including a winged Pegasus, and the light fittings in the entrance in the shape of radio valves.
