Andrews dedicated his life to preserving Australia's maritime history, with his deep connection to the sea and to Sydney Harbour, combined with his vast knowledge, making him one of the country's most respected authorities on maritime heritage.
Throughout his career, Andrews made significant contributions to the preservation of marine heritage and was involved in several pivotal maritime projects. His early efforts were crucial in supporting the Sydney Heritage Fleet and he contributed to the Australian National Maritime Museum. His writing and research played a role in the recovery of the TSS Earnslaw in Queenstown NZ and the rescue of the tall ship James Craig, as well as the preservation of other naval and maritime history that might otherwise have been lost.
In 2012 Andrews donated the Graeme Andrews Working Harbour Collection to the City of Sydney Archives. This substantial donation, consisting of over 10,000 images from the 1850s to the 1990s, covered themes including ships and boats, harbour shorelines and the buildings and activities along the harbour edge. The acquisition of this collection has provided the City of Sydney Archives with one of the most significant collections of working harbour images still in private hands.
