Lake Northam was named after City of Sydney Alderman, William Herbert Northam. The statue shown is a replica of the 5.5 metre yacht, Barrenjoey, which was unveiled on 13 July, 1967 to commemorate Northam and his crew for winning Australia’s first gold medal in sailing at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. KA14, indicating the vessel’s sail number, is shown on the statue. The statue sits on a small island within the walled lake, a remnant of the more extensive tidal watercourse once known as Blackwattle Creek.
