Carmichael immigrated to Sydney in 1825. He came to Sydney on board the "Triton" as a steerage passenger. Carmichael published Select views of Sydney in 1829. He was apparently most successful as a commercial engraver, producing numerous bill-heads and advertisements for Sydney firms, many of which were reproduced in New South Wales Calendar and General Post Office Directory" between 1833 and 1857. Three of his views appeared in Wells Geographical Dictionary for 1848 showing Boyd Town and Sydney. Although he needed to be able to put his hand to almost anything associated with his trade, he is notable for having been one of the earliest free emigrant artists to pursue a lifelong professional career in New South Wales.
