The two steel balls, ("Kelvins Balls") were iron correcting spheres to help reduce magnetic fields, which affected the compass, on the iron clad ships. The vertical bar, on the near side of the binnacle, is a soft iron bar placed in a tube to counteract the vertical magnetism inherent within a ship. One of the ships funnels is in the background. Photo taken by Beatrice Valmai (Jenkins) Mason, with her Kodak Box Brownie camera, on a trip which left Sydney on the 19 January 1924 & arrived in London on the 28th February 1924. Scanned from a print loaned to the Archives by Marilyn Mason in March 2016. A floating compass is inside the housing.+LanguageNo linguistic content - Not applicable (zxx)
