Unique IDAY-0131DescriptionThe activity has resulted in a range of achievements that combine to make Glebe more pleasant place to live and visit.
By lobbying, major proposals that would have impacted poorly on Glebe have been reduced. E.g. the cessation of the North Western Expressway that would have demolished buildings, divided Glebe and bought noise and air pollution.
Open space has increased particularly by the beautification of major parks – Bicentennial Park, Blackwattle Bay Park and Jubilee Park. The Foreshore Walk and Cycleway attracts visitors to Glebe and adds to the enjoyment of local people.
Some open space has been replanted with native plants e.g. Orphan School Creek Gully.
Unsympathetic Developments have been opposed and some threatened buildings have found a new use. Eg Benledi and the Homeopathic Hospital became the new Glebe Library.
Glebe Point Road has been revitalised. Commencing in 1989 the Glebe Society and representatives of other organisations joined to consider improvements to Road. Activities included circulating questionnaires and tabulating the results, dealing with consultants that resulted in replanting street trees , floral decorations, resurfacing, restoring some structures, landscaping, improving lighting, and providing new street furniture.
Through diligence and co-operation with other organisations impact of noise from aircraft and helicopters has been minimised.
Light Rail transportation was re-introduced in 1997 and bus routes to various destinations are available. Traffic issues are under continuing negotiation.
Noise and air pollution have been reduced and there is a higher standard of cleanliness.
The identification of buildings and structures of heritage value provides a special focus for Glebe.
The Glebe Music Festival featuring venues in Glebe and artists associated with in Glebe was inaugurated in 1990.
Publications and web site presence promoting the heritage aspects of Glebe, the diversity of the population, facilities, open spaces and vibrancy have made Glebe known as widely as possible.
