The volumes served as Council's year books, and contain general information about the Council and the areas it controls, as well as photographs of Council buildings, parks and Council officers. DescriptionThis series consists of small red volumes produced by Council each year for the period 1900-1941. The volumes were created by the City Treasury Department I (AG-00120). "Vade mecum" is latin for "go with me" and was commonly used for a handbook or guide.

The volumes served as Council's year books. They contain general information about the Council and the areas it controls, as well as photographs of Council buildings, parks and Council officers. It is common to see very few changes in content from year to year.

The volumes contain the following information: a calendar for the year, gazette notice of the first Municipal Council, list of Mayors of the City, a list of Aldermen for the year, an analysis of votes recorded at the previous election, information about Council meetings and the various committee meetings, its boundaries, public holidays on which the Town Hall will be closed, information on City buildings such as the Sydney Town Hall, the Exhibition Building, Prince Alfred Park and the Queen Victoria Building, the Sydney Town Hall Organ and finances of the Council.

As the series progressed, other items of information were included such as the Electricity Supply Undertaking (1905), Sydney Streets, Commemorative Tablets (1906), City Parks and Reserves (1907), Pyrmont Public Baths, Copy Grant of City Arms and notes on historical Sydney.

The volumes each have an alphabetical index. From 1903-1905 the index is situated at the front of the book, but from 1906 onwards it is located at the back of the book. There is also a list of illustrations.

The series started on 01/01/1900 and ended on 31/12/1941 although content is not held for early years.
