Records of Laurie Lambert, 1886-1983
Description
Unique IDAS-0071Start dateBetween 13th April 1886 and 15th August 1983Start date qualifierexactFormatVarious - See Descriptive NoteShort descriptionThis series consists of some collected material of historical interest and some papers created or kept by Laurie Lambert because of their relevance to his clerical work and later his executive functions.
Laurie Lambert joined the City as a Junior Messenger in the City Engineers Department on 23 April 1934 and retired as the Director of Administration on 15 August 1983.
Some of these records were collected by Lambert to assist him in his clerical work and later his executive functions. Some are of records he collected of historical interest or importance to the City, including ephemera and commemorative items.DescriptionThis series was donated to Council's Archives by Laurie Lambert on 7 November 1983.
The records were collected by Lambert for two main reasons:
-firstly to assist him in his clerical work and later executive functions, and
-secondly for their historical or curiosity value.
The starting date for the series has been taken from the date he joined Council as a Junior Messenger in the City Engineer's Department (23 April 1934). He retired from Council on 15 August 1983. The series content predates Lambert's time at Council.
The series contains the following types of records: - folders relating to Acts of Parliament and legal opinions
- commemorative items
- items relating to the history of Sydney and Glebe
- photographs and plans
- invitations
- his personal information file on the hiring of the Town Hall
- souvenir programs and publications, and
- notes and letters with antiquarian or historical content.
The original sources of the records are very varied, some originating from individuals and institutions outside of Council. Most of the records however, were created by departments within Council, and a small number were created by Laurie Lambert himself.
The records were arranged by the Archivist in 1983, as there was little order when they were accessioned. Most of the items were subsequently transferred to Archives Information Folders, the Sydney Reference Collection, the Archives Image Library, and the reference collection of plans held in the Archives Search Room. This explains the gaps in the item numbers of the series.
In 2010, the invitations were individually listed by an Archivist into AS-1142, Community Ephemera Collection.
