The registers were created and maintained by the following agencies:
- City Surveyor's Department (AG-0087) in the period 01/01/1890 to 19/01/1925;
- City Engineer and City Surveyor's Department II (AG-0088) in the period 20/01/1925 to 29/08/1928;
- City Engineering and Building Surveyors Department (AG-0061) in the period 31/08/1928 to 31/05/1936 and
- City Engineers Department I (AG-0005) in the period 01/06/1936 to 14/10/1985.

The entries are handwritten in black or blue ink. Red ink is used to distinguish entries giving the 'old name' followed by the new name. A separate page is allotted to these entries in the second register. The entries are arranged alphabetically, although this deteriorates in later maintenance of the second register.

The first volume is titled 'Naming and Re-naming Streets and Public Places 1911'. A note on the inside front cover says 'These entries were checked & altered by me to date 9 Oct 1911 - not responsible for any later entries'. This date has been taken as the start date for the volume, although the contents date back to 6 October 1811.

The second volume is labelled 'Alteration of Names'. A note on the front says 'See M.D.S. *Sub Cat 17) for namings after 1/1/1981.' It dates from 25 October 1926 until 14 October 1985, although there are only a few entries after 1981.

The first volume was maintained by the Survey Branch until 1926, when a second register was created due to the physical deterioration of the first. Information from the first register was transferred to the second, which was used by the Survey Branch for current administrative purposes and enquiries from the public.LanguageEnglish (eng)
