The registers were created by the following agencies:
- City Engineer and City Surveyors Department I AG-0086 (01/01/1881 to 01/01/1890)
- City Surveyor's Department (AG-0087) in the period 01/01/1890 to 20/01/1925;
- City Engineer and City Surveyor's Department II (AG-0088) in the period 20/01/1925 to 29/08/1928;
- City Engineering and Building Surveyors Department (AG-0061) in the period 31/08/1928 to 31/05/1936 and
- City Engineers Department I (AG-0005) in the period 01/06/1936 to 05/08/1974.

Two photocopies of items are appended to the second register referring to the alignment of streets in the Darlington Municipality and the Burrough of Newtown.

The first volume was created in 1881 by the City Engineer and City Surveyors Department I (AG-0086) and dates to 11 March 1896, although most entries only date to 1888. The spine is labelled 'Alignments Original'. This was superseded in the late 1890s by the second register to which entries were transferred.
