The restoration of the Queen Victoria Building was undertaken by Ipoh Gardens Berhad with the cooperation of the Council. It began in 1984 and was completed in the second half of 1986.

The numbering system of this series has two elements. The first is the set number or proof sheet number, and the second is the frame number. For example, 10/12 refers to Set 10, frame 12.

The architects divided up the building for the restoration and allocated each area a number. For example, 387 refers to Level 3 of the building, area 87. These numbers appear in the accession lists under the heading 'Area/Location'. The subject of the photograph is also given on the lists.
These lists were provided by Graeme Drew, Restoration Architect, City Engineer's Department.

Set 20, frames 28-35 are not part of the series, but are photographs taken of Council's Archives repository at the time, at 39 Jones Street Ultimo.

A list of photographs taken on 7 February 1985 was received from the Restoration Architect but the prints were never received.

There are five albums containing black and white contact sheets and photographic prints.
