The plans were created 1884-1921 to record sewer and drainage facilities in Sydney. Most relate to the 1880s. They show positions of main sewers and gullies, dimensions of pipes, locations of outfalls, positions of pumps hydrants and locks shafts and manholes. Some sheets also show positions of lamps. All sheets show outline of buildings and a few are annotated to show the type of construction (brick, stone, iron, timber).

Twelve plans (E3, F1, F3, G3, P1, Q3, T2, U2, U3, Y2, Y3, Z2) are annotated "correct 9/90" and signed by the City Engineer. In May 1891 an almost complete set of plans was annotated with read and black lines to identify Government and Council-laid sewers. In the same year other sheets were annotated to show the "position of underground drainage" according to details supplied by the Board.
