Information recorded is generally: assessment number; street address of the property; name of the person rated; brief description of the property (eg 'house'); assessment and rate figures; name of person who actually paid the rates and the date of payment.

At various times the information recorded about names of persons connected with each property changed. From 1983-1912, name of the 'occupier' was also recorded. From 1895-1922 the name of the 'lessee' was recorded. From 1922, the only name recorded was of the 'rated person'.

Within each volume, entries are in numerical order by assessment numbers, which accords with a street by street listing but with the streets not in alphabetical order. Not indexed. From 1914-c1930, Ward divisions appear in the volumes. After 1930, streets are entered in alphabetical order by street-names.
