Details shown include: name and address of the ratepayer; address (and sometimes description) of the property; valuation number; unimproved capital value (UCV); and amount of rate payable and any arrears. The notices were manually updated to provide a record of payments received.

The volumes are arranged by rating year (1 Jan-31 Dec). There are 4 to 6 volumes per year, arranged alphabetically by the surname of the person liable to pay the rates, to whom the notices were addressed. However persons who received notices in respect of non-rateable property are found in a separate sequence at the end of the last volume for each year.

Ratebooks for the City of Sydney are not extant for the period 1929-1973. CRS 31, [City of Sydney] Valuation Lists, 1949-1963 is regarded as the successor series in the absence of the City Ratebooks immediately post-1948.
