The Lady Mayoress' Relief Fund began in 1933 as the Lady Mayoress' Clothing Fund. It is not known whether files were
created from the beginning of the fund and are no longer
extant or whether the practice of creating files only began properly in 1970.

Most of the files dealt with routine arrangements for the various fund-raising functions held by the fund. The majority of these were destroyed in 1993 with some of the files from 1970 to 1979 retained as examples of the Fund's activities.

The other files that were retained deal with policy matters, correspondence with the Charities Administration Section of the Department of Services, special projects undertaken by the Fund such as the Breakthrough Foundation and Operation Runaway that were aimed at helping the homeless youth of Sydney, and the winding up of the Fund in 1993.
