Unique IDAS-0779DateBetween 1st January 1980 and 1st January 1992Date qualifiercircaFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionOn 23 June 1980 Council formally agreed "to the establishment of a Sister City relationship with the City of Nagoya, Japan, and that the Lord Mayor establish a Preparatory Committee for such purpose". The first meeting of the Sydney/Nagoya Sister City Committee was held on 25 November 1980 and Lord Mayor Doug Sutherland was elected Chairman. R J White of the Bank of NSW was elected Vice Chairman.
The other members of the Committee elected at this meeting were: L P Carter, Town Clerk of Sydney; Peter Dunstan, Sydney Chamber of Commerce; A F Black, Price Waterhouse & Co; R J Lamble; Max T Sandow, ANZ Bank Ltd; H D Huyer; M Okuda, The Tokai Bank Ltd; D Beresford, Department of Tourism; W Warner, Australian Gallery Directors Council; John E Gall, Commercial Banking Company of Sydney; R H Johnson, Thiess Toyota; D H Shmith, York Motors; K J Pratley, Australian Wool Corporation; G J Tredinnick, Joint Coal Board; J J Herron, CSR; Edmond Capon, Art Gallery of NSW; Dr Shigemasa Suzuki; Professor Sir Bruce Williams, University of Sydney; and D A Swan, NSW Department of Education.
The formal establishment of the Sister City relationship took place in the Sydney Town Hall on 29 January 1981. The Committee deals with exchange visits, gifts (including gifts of koalas), fairs and social events, especially Japan Week, exhibitions, and trade between Sydney and Nagoya.
This Committee is still an active one and was described as one of Council's "special external committees" at a meeting on 15 June 1993. The committee determines its own meeting times and chairmanship but secretarial services are provided by Council. The current minute books for this Committee are held by the City Promotions Unit of CA 112, Cultural and Community Services, 1993+.
The minutes are typed, pasted into minute books, and signed by the Chairman.
