Unique IDAS-1035Start dateBetween 1st March 1989 and 31st December 1993Start date qualifiercircaFormatPhotograph - PrintDescriptionIn 1988, the NSW Department of Planning and the City of Sydney established a Central Sydney Plan Unit to prepare a statutory plan for the central area of Sydney.

A key element in this was the preparation of a heritage inventory of buildings in the City Centre, approved by Council on 9 August 1988. This study was jointly funded by the Department and Council and undertaken by Thorp Green and Associates and Anglin Associates. (CRS 326: C07-00026 and P04-00070)

The data that was collected on each building as part of this exercise forms a database known as the City of Sydney Heritage Inventory. The consultants were also responsible for taking black and white photographs of buildings listed in the Inventory that could be scanned into the database. These photographs were later transferred to Council's Archives and form this series.

Each photograph is numbered according to the inventory number given to each property. Not every building has a photograph.
There is one wooden box containing small B&W prints (1000 - 9060) as well as 10 polypropylene albums containing 8" x 10" prints (1000 - 9060). The 8" x 10" prints have been scanned to ArchivePix. When a photograph could not be taken for some reason, for example, the building site was covered by scaffolding, a card with the typed explanation has been placed in the wooden box.

The 9000 series are photographs of streetscapes and laneways rather than individual buildings.

More recent photographs required for the database have been taken by Council's Heritage Planners using a digital camera. These images are stored on Council's network in jpeg format.
