Josiah Gentle opened the Bedford Brickworks in 1893. Austral Bricks, which was founded in 1908, took over the Bedford Brickworks in 1933 and excavated clay [Wianamatta Shale] from this area for their brick production. This area was also known as the Tempe Tip but is now part of Sydney Park. At the upper right is the engineering business of George Foster and Sons at 1-29 Princes Highway, St Peters. At the upper centre is the building at 3 Barwon Park Road on corner of Crown Street with the Steelo sign on its roof. To its left are the three chimneys at the Carrington Brick Company and next on the left are the two chimneys at T Carr and Company brickworks, who are both on Barwon Park Road.
