Fortunately for Sydney there where a number of swamps capable of providing a pure supply just south of the settlement. Remnants of these swamps are now the ornamental lakes in Centennial Park. In 1827 the governor accepted a proposal from surveyor John Busby to tunnel through from the Lachlan Swamp to Hyde Park. The tunnel, which became known as Busby's Bore, was built by convicts and took ten years to complete. The section of the tunnel shown here is between Riley and Liverpool Streets.
