In the background, left of centre, can be seen the Griffith Tea building at 46-52 Wentworth Avenue Surry Hills. In the centre is the Mark Foys warehouse at 133 Goulburn Street, and to the lower right is the Macquarie Hotel at 40-44 Wentworth Avenue. The Hay Street Stormwater Channel is listed on the Sydney Water Heritage Register. The Goulburn Street branch of the drain runs from the intersection of Hay and Elizabeth Streets, along Elizabeth Street to Wentworth Street and along Goulburn Street to Crown Street South. It was constructed between 1863 and 1929.
