Mark Foy's
This collection contains a selection of archives relating to the Mark Foy's piazza building and business.
Mark Foy's Department Store (Mark Foy's Emporium or Mark Foy's Ltd), which was located in the block bounded by Elizabeth, Liverpool and Castlereagh Streets, opened in 1909. Designed by architect Arthur Anderson, from the firm McCredie & Anderson, the three-story Piazza Store included a ballroom and Australia's first escalator. The store underwent a series of renovations, with the most extensive in 1927-1930 by Ross & Rowe Architects, increasing it to eight stories.
When Mark Foy's Limited ceased trading in 1980, the City Piazza building became Grace Brothers Piazza until 1982-1983. It was renamed to the Downing Centre in 1991. The building is listed on New South Wales State Heritage Register.
